Pudsey has a history that dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086. It was recognised in the 18th and 19th centuries as a centre for wool manufacture. A few mill buildings survive to this day, now housing flats and retail units as opposed to workers and machinery.

The town itself has come a long way too, offering a wide range of amenities while retaining a strong sense of community. Pudsey Market continues to thrive, opening on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings and hosting the Pudsey Produce and Craft Market one Sunday a month.

This is complemented by a wealth of shops, pubs and cafes along Pudsey’s bustling high street and a host of big names at the Pudsey Owlcoates shopping centre.

Nearby Pudsey Park is one of the most popular parks in the area and, at around 7.5 hectares, is packed with things to see and do, including a play park, bowling green and skate park. It also hosts the annual Scarecrow Festival.

Other green spaces include Queens Park, which has welcomed the annual carnival for the past 34 years. In addition, Post Hill, 28 hectares of meadow, woodland and waterway, is home to a range of plant and animal species and has also proved popular with walkers, cyclists and runners. For a more relaxed outdoor experience, Wadlands Hall Equestrian Centre offers horseback riding tours, or you could take to the greens at Fulneck Golf Club.

House prices in Pudsey continue to be significantly below the national average, at around £212,000. They are also below other more established regional areas such as Roundhay, Rawdon or Horsforth.

The town has a strong offering of period terraced houses, which accounted for the majority of sales in the past year. Average prices for these types of properties are in the region of £180,000.

Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £215,584, with detached properties fetching £358,390. The town also has a good stock of more quirky properties, with mills, schools and other historic buildings being converted to housing and modern developments offering everything from one-bed flats to large, detached family homes.

Within Pudsey, there is a good selection of primary and secondary schools. Holybrook and Fagley Primary have both been rated outstanding by Ofsted. Fulneck independent school has taught local children aged between three and 18 for around 250 years and offers a wide range of A-level subjects along with several Level 3 BTEC courses. Other schools offering secondary and sixth form education include Pudsey Grammar and Crawshaw Academy, which both have a Good Ofsted rating.

Transport links

Its great position between the centres of Leeds and Bradford means Pudsey will always be an excellent choice for commuters. As well as offering efficient links to the M62 and M1, the town is home to New Pudsey Train Station, which runs Eastbound and Westbound trains between Leeds and Bradford as regularly as every 15 minutes, alongside further connections to Manchester and Blackpool up to twice an hour. On average, the journey to Leeds takes 11 minutes, while Bradford is a mere nine minutes away. Annual, monthly, weekly and Flexi tickets are available, catering for all options. Several bus routes offer direct services to and from Leeds City Centre and the surrounding area.
